Housing Programs
Housing Programs: Two public housing communities, Robert Holmes Gardens and Julius Engel Gardens, are administered by the EHA for low income residents who are accepted through application. The garden apartment-style housing includes community centers where residents can gather as neighbors for social events and meetings. Julius Engel Gardens, located on Willard Dunham Drive in the Bonhamtown section of Edison, is a quiet neighborhood of two-story townhomes on wide streets with plenty of parking. A community center serves as a gathering place for the community. EHA offices, located at 14 Rev. Samuel Carpenter Blvd., is situated within Robert Holmes Gardens. The attractive, red brick townhouses are conveniently located off Inman Avenue, one of Edison’s main commercial centers.
Section 8: This program is a housing choice voucher program from the federal government for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Housing assistance is provided to families or individuals who are free to find their own housing that meets the requirements of the program and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects.
Section 8 also has a portability option, meaning that recipients can rent housing with Section 8 voucher assistance outside the jurisdiction of the initial housing authority where the voucher was received. See the Portability page on the website for more information.
